The Role of Parents in Raising Righteous Children
Table of Contents
1. The Parental Responsibility in Islam
Among the greatest trusts Allah has placed upon believers is the trust of raising children. Children are not merely a joy or social status — they are an amanah (trust) from Allah, and parents will be accountable for how they raised them.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every one of you is a shepherd and every one of you is responsible for his flock. The man is a shepherd over his family and is responsible for his flock." (Bukhari & Muslim). This leadership over the family is not a title — it is a daily, living responsibility.
2. Teaching Tawheed First
The first and most important thing a parent must instil in their child is the correct belief in Allah — Tawheed. This was the call of every Prophet. Luqman the Wise, whose counsel to his son is recorded in the Quran, began with the absolute prohibition of Shirk (associating partners with Allah):
Parents should ensure that La ilaha illallah is among the first words their children hear and learn. Teach them who Allah is, what He deserves from us, and that He alone is worthy of worship.
3. The Role of Islamic Education
While the home is the first school, formal Islamic education is indispensable. The Prophet ﷺ established the Masjid as a centre of learning, and throughout Islamic history, madrasas and Islamic institutes have been pillars of civilisation.
Enrolling your child in a structured Islamic program ensures they learn:
- Correct Quranic recitation (Tajweed) and eventually memorisation
- The pillars of faith and Islam in an age-appropriate manner
- Islamic manners, ethics, and the way of the Prophet ﷺ
- Arabic language — the key to understanding primary Islamic sources
- A sense of belonging to the Muslim Ummah
At Manhaj Al Ambiya, our Madrasah programs are designed specifically to address these needs, providing structured, authentic Islamic education for children in a nurturing and supportive environment.
4. Practical Parenting Tips from the Sunnah
Be the Example
Children learn first by observation. If they see their parents praying consistently, reciting Quran, and treating others with respect, they will internalise these practices. The most powerful parenting tool is living Islam, not merely lecturing about it.
Make Du'a for Your Children
Ibrahim (alayhissalam) made du'a for righteous offspring: "My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants." (Quran 14:40). Never underestimate the power of a parent's supplication for their child.
Balance Discipline with Love
The Prophet ﷺ showed immense love and tenderness to children. He would hold his grandchildren, play with them, and kiss them. At the same time, he taught them the importance of correct belief and practice. Balance is the Sunnah way.
Protect Their Environment
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every child is born upon the fitrah (natural disposition); his parents make him a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian." (Bukhari & Muslim). The environment you provide — the friends, media, and atmosphere at home — directly shapes who your child becomes.
Conclusion
Raising righteous children is one of the greatest investments a parent can make — both for this world and the hereafter. A righteous child is a sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity) that continues to benefit the parent even after their death, as the Prophet ﷺ said: "When a person dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him." (Muslim)
At Manhaj Al Ambiya, we partner with parents in this noble mission. Our programs provide children with the authentic Islamic foundation they need to grow into upright, knowledgeable, and God-conscious Muslims. We invite every parent in Mangaluru to enrol their child today.
